How to Choose an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Training
*EMDR training/certification requirements come from EMDRIA and can change. Confirm current requirements here.
Figures below reflect EMDRIA's standard Basic Training structure as of 2026.
When choosing an EMDR training, confirm it's EMDRIA-approved, includes all three required components (instruction, practicum, consultation), offers strong trainer access and support, and fits your schedule and learning style. The cheapest or fastest option isn't always the one that builds real competence.
Must-have: EMDRIA approval
Only EMDRIA-approved Basic Trainings count toward using EMDR properly and toward certification. Verify approval directly.
What separates a great training from a checkbox
Experienced, accessible trainers who answer real clinical questions
Quality practicum with meaningful supervised practice, not just observation
Consultation that's genuinely supportive as you start with live cases
Post-training support and a community to keep growing
Format considerations
In-person vs. virtual, weekend-intensive vs. spread out, group size, and cost. My Salt Lake City training, for example, is in person across two 3-day weekends (Oct 29–31 and Dec 3–5, 2026) at the Marriott University Park, with reduced rates for non-profit/community-mental-health clinicians, interns, students, and veterans, plus payment plans.
